Michigan's Thumb feels different in October.

The Tuscola County Pumpkin Festival brings several days of fall activities to downtown Caro, including decorated pumpkins, food, music, contests, children's activities, a car show, craft vendors and Sunday's grand parade.
Many festival activities are free, making this an especially easy destination for families.
For Michigan Weekend and Day Trippers, Caro also makes a great gateway into the Thumb.
Don't automatically head home when the festival is over. Continue toward Cass City, Sebewaing or the Lake Huron shoreline and turn one event into an entire fall day.
Moonlight Madness + RiverFire | Sebewaing | October 1
There's something about a small town after dark in the fall.
Sebewaing's Moonlight Madness and RiverFire gives visitors a reason to explore the western side of the Thumb.
Make Sebewaing part of the route rather than simply the destination. Wander downtown. Find something to eat. Explore the area and see where the road takes you next.
Port Crescent State Park Fall Harvest Festival | Port Austin | October 2–4
Want to turn your October road trip into an overnight adventure?
Port Crescent State Park hosts its Fall Harvest Festival October 2–4, with decorated campsites, games, activities and a site-decorating contest.
Festival activities are intended for registered campers, so this one requires a little advance planning.
For Michigan Weekend and Day Trippers willing to stay overnight, Port Crescent offers something extra: you're near the tip of the Thumb, surrounded by trails, Lake Huron and one of Michigan's designated dark-sky preserves.
Sleeper State Park Harvest Festival | Caseville | October 2–4
Caseville has its own October camping tradition with a Harvest Festival Weekend at Sleeper State Park.
Halloween camping makes a fun excuse to spend an entire weekend near Saginaw Bay rather than rushing home after a few hours.

If you're already heading north for Flannel Fest or one of the state park harvest weekends, add Caseville to the route.
Haunted Village | Port Sanilac | October 10 & 17
This one belongs on the fall bucket list.
The Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum becomes a Haunted Village for two October evenings.
Historic buildings and Halloween are already an interesting combination, but the location also gives you an excuse to explore the eastern shoreline of the Thumb.
For Michigan Weekend and Day Trippers, consider making Port Sanilac the evening destination and spending the afternoon exploring M-25 and the Lake Huron coast before the haunting begins.
Pink or Treat | Cass City | October 15
Cass City joins the October fun with Pink or Treat, a community event that gives visitors another opportunity to experience the center of the Thumb.
Don't just attend the event and leave.
Walk downtown. Stop somewhere local. Take a drive through the countryside. Explore a town you may otherwise only know from a road sign.

Sometimes the attraction itself is the event.
Szymanski's Creekside Acres offers fall fun including a corn maze, pumpkins, mums and seasonal décor.

Sebewaing returns to our October list with Trick or Treat at Bay View Gardens.
This could easily become part of a western Thumb afternoon—especially for families looking for smaller, community-centered Halloween activities rather than huge commercial attractions.
Community Trunk or Treat | Sandusky | October 23
October's final weekends are packed with Halloween activities, including a Community Trunk or Treat in Sandusky.
If you're coming from outside the Thumb, look at the map before you leave home.
Instead of driving directly there and directly back, find one or two other stops along the route.
That simple habit changes everything.

Don't leave Caseville too early.
The Caseville Chamber also lists Nightmare on Prospect Street through the Caseville Historical Society in connection with the October 24 Witch Walk festivities.

October 24 also gives visitors another opportunity to head north toward Port Austin for the season's closing market.

They added golf carts.
The Village's current 2026 schedule lists its Halloween Trunk or Treat & Golf Cart Parade for October 31.

Cass City Witches Ride & Witches Walk | Cass City | October 31
And then there are the witches taking over Cass City.
The Cass City Witches Ride & Witches Walk brings bikes, walkers, costumes and Halloween fun together on October 31.
Riders and walkers will gather for the morning event before the celebration continues with a Witches Brew Social.
It's playful. It's different. And it's exactly the type of small-town experience Worth the Trip wants Michigan Weekend and Day Trippers to discover.

Then stay and explore Cass City.
Michigan Weekend and Day Trippers: Don't Just Attend the Event
Here's our challenge for you.
Whichever event gets you into the car this October, add one more stop.
If you're heading to Caro, continue into Cass City.
If you're going to Caseville, drive up to Port Austin.
If you're visiting Port Sanilac, follow M-25 along Lake Huron.
